I suspect the reason Microsoft purchased them was to pull the free tools
off the market, and to limit the effectiveness of future versions of those
tools.

To Microsoft, the cost of buying the company was a drop in the bucket, well
worth it for the ability to pull their tools off the market or cripple
them.
