 OS X servers do a serial number check on  the same subnet and will complain
if there are duplicates. The Apple claims for information transferred for a
software update seems rather benign.

When you use Mac OS X Server 10.4 to locally host updates as a Software
Update Server, it reports certain information back to Apple. In server
versions 10.4 to 10.4.2, this information is limited to:

  a.. The update that the client downloaded
  b.. The primary language of the client computer
In Mac OS X Server 10.4.3 and later, the information collected expands to this set:

  a.. Mac OS version of the client
  b.. Hardware model of the client
  c.. Amount of RAM installed in client
  d.. The primary language of the client
  e.. Updates offered by the server
  f.. Updates selected by the client
  g.. Any errors in downloading or installing during the last update attempt
