In the epistle "Re: Mard Gras (Hap)" scribed 04-12-98 14:32,
Hap Newsom did thus proclaim to Larry Bolch:
Hap
HN> LB>HN> have a 15" lens...boy that's a big one!
HN>
HN> LB>The neat thing is that it may or may not be! It is 380mm -
HN> LB>roughly like a 400mm, if it is on a 35mm - big in that context.
HN>
HN> LB>On your 4 x 5 it would be a nice portrait lens, about the
HN> LB>equivalent of a 105mm on your 35.
HN>
HN> Hmmm, I would think it would be a bit longer than that...I'm still a
HN> novice at calculating lenses for the 4X5...
It stands to reason. A 160mm on a 4x5 is about the equivalent
of a 43 on a 35mm. A 380 is about two and a half times the
focal length of the 160 so applying the ratio to 35mm lenses
would give you a bit over 100mms.
HN> LB>Bob Dial mentioned it was for an 8 x 10. On that, it would just
HN> LB>be a standard normal lens just about the same as the garden variety
HN> LB>50mm lens sold on millions of 35mm SLRs. Oh, and if it would cover
HN> LB>an 11 x 14 sheet on my dream Deardorff, it would be a wide-angle!
HN>
HN> How much bellows draw would I need to use something like that on my
HN> Super Speed graphic?
Of course that would depend on the design of the lens. With
large format lenses there are both long focus and telephoto
lenses. I have a 180mm true telephoto for my 6x7 Linhof and
it does not require a significantly greater amount of bellows
draw at infinity - probably less than a half-inch. There are
tele lenses from all the major lens-makers - Nikon T, Rodenstock
Tele-Rotelars, Tele-Fujinons and Schneider Tele-Artons for
for example would be appropriate on a press camera. You might
find it hard to get a focusing cam, but can always focus on
the ground glass.
Of course if you do have the bellows draw, there is a huge
array of long focus lenses. For example, I have a Zeiss 180mm
Sonnar for the old Graphic XLs that is mounted in a long barrel
focusing mount. If I were to have it remounted for the Linhof,
I would be using a lot more draw.
larry!
... Nothing exceeds like excess.
