Hello Jayne,
I can say, from harsh experience, that this also applies to men as well.
Even if the pimply guy wins national captain of the chess club,
most of the girls are going to talk to the captain of the football
team instead. (Unless he's in Eastern Europe, then he might
have a chance :-)
On the other hand, I know of women who did land the captain of
the football team and later wound up divorcing him because
he wasn't brilliant. In other words, beauty gets the foot
in the door but it doesn't keep it open.
