Actually seen exactly the same behavior with Office 97.
The message is correct. WHen you check the console, you'll
find the files are exactly as described.
What appears to be happening is either the programs are opportunistic,
believing if you have opened a file, you'll likely to open it again and
therefore they are taking a write lock on the file.
Or, there is a bug in the Client32 that doesn't drop the lock.
There are two ways we've found: 1) logoff the server; 2) delete the
connection.
