DSL stands for "Deep Scattering Layer". It is a thin horizontal zone of living
organisms in the ocean located in the water column. This layer appears to rise
in the evening and to descend in the morning. It is named this way because it
has the property to reflect sound waves, same as the seabed.
 
In technical language this layer therefore is also refered to as "false
bottom".
