I just purchased a Brother MFC (4550).
It is a stand-alone fax, a computer fax, a scanner (400 dpi), a
copier, and a straight through printer (600 dpi). Plus I can use
computer OCR software to convert a scan to text in many formats. The
only drawback is that as a copier it needs to feed the doc through the
rollers (vs a flatbed).
Great for both office and home and sells in the $800 range.
