Something in one of the responses to me fired a neuron that reminded me of a
killer class I had one semester about the psychology of composition.
Music, to be effective, is manipulative. The composer tries to create music
that elicits some response from someone, if only himself. Music that doesn't
manipulate to some extent probably doesn't connect.
See, this is the stuff that really interests me. I have a vast array of
compositional tools, and lots of technique to realize what I hear. So the big
question of how to get a listener to respond and to create some sort of
universal experience is important to me.
Add to that the fact that my popular work is message driven. I tend to deal
with very topical issues and current problems. This is stuff that I want to
communicate to my listener.
