  Hi Frankj, Kevin, Carlo!
We have a little box from Command Communications that is sometimes referred
to as a "comm-share" box. It checks the phone line and routes the call to
the fax machine if it detects a fax on the line, or to the phone answering
machine if it does not detect a fax. It has another connection for a modem,
so according to the manual, we could have a modem, fax and phone on the same
line.
We have been using the phone/fax features on our single home office line
for the last three years. We have lots of phone traffic, but with a personal
phone line used for outgoing local calls, we can usually keep that one open
for incoming business calls. If we are not in the office, our answering
machine picks up the phone calls routed by the commshare box.
We bought it at one of the office warehouse stores. Should cost about
$100, which will save you the monthly cost of an extra phone line for the fax
machine.
  Be seeing ya!
