Troy Smylie, 35, faces charges of
impersonating a police officer,
possession of a police gun and six other
felonies after he spent two months posing
as a member of the San Francisco Police
Department. "Officer Smylie" received
inspiration after finding a badge on a city
bus. Soon he won other officers’ trust,
borrowed squad cars and acquired a
.45-caliber automatic. The strange
scheme came to an end only after
Smylie, an out-of-work truck driver, tried
to turn in his badge. Other cops noted
that he helped out at several crime
scenes, and when the police department
posted a telephone hotline for victims to
call, it was inundated with praise for the
officer wannabe.
