Actually it's as legit a hypothesis as what you posted. >>A much better study is that of chessplayers, because there are absolutely >>no >>barriers to females who want to advance, and those who do (Polgars, > > Women in science and engineering have fewer "barriers" than do men. One of the flaws with achieving "diversity" through affirmative action is that the fewer incumbent females you have to start with (9-15 percent in engineering), the lower the threshhold for achieving the "goal" of improving it. Once you get 15 percent females in engineering at a university, that's success. >>Kosteniuk, etc.) are applauded for not getting their name through women's >>events (why do we even have "women's chess?" Does the rook only move >>halfway?). > > Women have separate chess events for the same reason they have > separate sporting events - because women aren't as good at > sports or chess as are men. Have you ever seen Judit Polgar play chess? She's ranked eighth in the world. Now compare the overall number of male and female players and that doesn't exactly help your argument. As I said above, the rewards for being a scientist (or chessplayer) are such that women are more likely to leave them on the table. Tell women that prince charming will marry the best scientist and you'd see more female scientists. >>Flip the argument, and you could say that men would be just as good at >>being >>homemakers as women, but what are the rewards for that other than his >>being >>called lazy and wanting to sponge off of a woman? >> >>Anyone getting on their soapbox about gender equality is going to have to >>examine the issue in an unbiased manner. > > You might try it some time.
