Well, attempting to be tactful about this, I must recommend you NOT
try any further 'tuning' on your system. You don't seem to have the
basic knowledge to do this. In the following paragraph I specifically
recommended you copy your current Config and Autoexec to a Bootable
diskette before changing anything. If you had done this, a simple
boot from this diskette and then a copy of them back to the root
of your C: drive would have restored your machine exactly as before.
No need to do a reformat and reload from tape.....

Once again you have almost the same machine as I. I also have a
540meg drive set to use only 528meg because of an older motherboard BIOS
that cannot 'see' anything greater than this.
'Upgrading the motherboard' is not going to be a solution. You have some
problems in your config and autoexec you are going to have to get corrected.
Did you see the note in this Quicken area from someone to me about the
mis-placement of a QEMM statement (don't know why he sent to me, he
should have sent to you.) From his message that you do not have a certain
QEMM line as the first line in the config, it would seem reasonable
that you are not even getting the QEMM software to work correctly.
Do you see error messages when you boot your machine? Do you know how
to press F8 when you see 'NOW LOADING DOS...' and 'step' thru each
config and autoexec line?
I think you need to have some basic DOS training. And not from a
'guru' that recommends 'upgrade your system' as the answer to your
problems. I don't know what you might have done by remming out the
'rocket.bin' statement, but if the machine didn't boot, if you had had
the bootable diskette with the old config and autoexec, you should have
been able to easily recover from it. And then continue to try some
of my other recommendations.
Next recommendation would be to find a reputable local PC business and
carry your case in (no need to take your monitor, they should have one
that will work) and see if they would look at your setup. Should do
this for a reasonable charge. And without wanting to sell you something.
You should be able to run WinforWkgps 3.11 on a 486DX50 with a 500meg
harddrive and 8 megs and get reasonable performance. Not blazingly
fast, but reasonable.
