Terry, there are several books written about generating methane.  There
was one artical in "Mother Earth News" years ago about how to use a 55
gallon metal barrel generating the gas into a truck tire inner tube 
connected to a stove.
Methane is generated when organic material is decomposed (Forget the
actual name) without air, such as in a cow's stomach.
