I guess you have not been reading this echo much of late but the
Bill mentioned here is me. I am the moderator of the echo and
have not been on a few nights because of my work as a bike patrol
officer, that is how it is related to the echo. I either try to
let people know here when I will be off the echo so they do not
worry as I am just getting back to work after major heart
surgery.
While working this weekend I again bring up the training of bike
riders. I talked with one man about his riding procedures. First
he was not wearing and head protection and also was riding in
bear feet. He was an accident waiting for a place to happen as if
he did hit anything or just fall he would have been injured to
the point of a hospital visit. Besides the bear feet and no head
protection he was not wearing a shirt. Riding down the center of
one of our parks road not at all concerned of the traffic that
was either behind him or trying to pass him. I stopped him and
discussed the safety issues and he said that there were no
regulations on how to ride a bike and he was going to ride
however he wanted. It was later discovered that he was also
drunk.
In another incident I observed another bike rider a little
younger than the first wearing head protection but also using a
malkman with full ear pieces. It was interesting how he did not
even hear me approace and if he could not hear me how was he
going to hear anything else pulling up behind him. I told him of
the probelms with riding with a walkman and he complied with my
request to put it away while biking.
