I don't know about Levittown, but in our London suburb horses were used
every day by the milkman, greengrocer, coalman, bread man, rag and bone man
etc.
Proof? Travel back in time with your bucket and shovel......
The companies concerned provided stables for the horses. It was a very good
way to make door-to-door deliveries as the horse would simply follow the
delivery man. No need to climb on a vehicle and drive it along. When the man
had his lunch, so did the horse, from a nose-bag.
