I think we should eliminate tires on several grounds; first,
by placing additional mass on the extreme outside of the
wheel, we increase the rotational inertia substantially,
wasting power and fuel. Secondly, the worn rubber compounds
enter the environment, our lungs, and the air in general,
presenting an environmental problem (we won't even get into
the old asbestos brake pads). Thirdly, the cushioning
effect of the rubber tires, while improving the riding
characteristics, decreases the "feel" of the road.
If you'd like, I can also argue the opposing position... ;-)
