Concerning logs:
When I was younger (I'm 22, so about 7 years ago), I wrote a program for my
Commodore 64 that kept tract of my daily mileage. Due to school, my only
real time for riding was from Mid-April until around 9/6 as the nice weather
in the summer, through the summer and into the first week of school is all I
had time for. Once school started, I considered my bike riding days
practically over till the next summer. Anyway, this program I wrote kept a
count of how many days were left until 9/1. I also set a season goal mileage
of say 2000 miles. It would figure out that I had say 100 days left, to go
2000 miles, so I had to average 20 miles a day. And now say today, I ride 32
miles. So I have 99 days left to ride 1,968 miles. And it keeps going.
My average miles per day would constantly change each day, depending upon if
I rode or not, and how far. It became a races against the clock, to get as
many miles in as quickly as possible to get the goal of 2000 miles per
summer, or whatever.
I found the training was great, I found the time to get the miles in, and I
loved to ride more then the 'days requirement' so that my average needed for
the next day would go down again. Many times, I hit my goal in Mid-August
and over-shot it by a few hundred miles.
So, I kept a log, day by day detail. :)
