By the time the race started, Joe had moved up to 37th spot due to other
cars being bumped to the back of the pack for various reasons.  He didn't
hve the speed of the upper echelon cars, but he managed to finish in 23rd.
Most of that gain came at the expense of attrition, but that's part of the
game too.

He and Johnny Sauter had a good duel going for awhile until Sauter hit the
wall about lap 175.  I dunno if Joe was involved in that or not, it didn't
look like it from the replay, but maybe they bumped before the camera found
them.
