Alan -
The 2B is a little narrow. Best to use "Exalted Carrier" AM
reception. Essentially this means turning on the BFO and tuning in
the AM signal like an SSB signal. With the 3.6 kHz b/w selectivity
you have one sideband. This actually helps with things like selective
fading, etc. But it ain't "AM" !
The R-4/A/B receivers are only a little better, since they have a 4.8
kHz selectivity. This is _almost_ enough for AM, which is generally
assumed to be about 6-7 kHz wide. So again, you really are limited to
Exalted Carrier AM, as AM that is center tuned will be a little muffled.
The R-4C has an AM position and Drake offered a 4 kHz b/w and 6 kHz
b/w filter. The receiver came from the factory with a resistor in the
socket for the (optional) AM filter. The "roofing" filter for the
R-4C is 8 kHz wide so is pretty "high fidelity" for AM, and this is
what you get with the resistor in there.
But for REAL AM , you need a real AM receiver. Collins 51J-3/4,
National NC-300/303, Hammarlund HQ-129X, HQ-140X, Hallicrafters
SX-100, etc. But none of these qualify for "small footprint"!

2B and claims it is a bit too narrow bandwidth wise for good AM
fidelity. Are there any of say the R-series that may have a bit better
audio on AM? I had passed along information that with AM a weak and
fading signal will have an affect on the audio so a GOOD antenna is
necessary too. Thanks
