If I'm not wrong you asked about used HF transceivers for less than
USD 500.

Why not add 50 bucks to that and get a factory new Icom IC-718 complete
with DSP. I would do that and even if I have a Drake TR-7 I'm still
contemplating to buy such a rig.

I thought somebody closer to you would suggest the same but since nobody
has done so, here's my suggestion.
