| subject: | Max linux vs windows |
Hi,
Back in June or July I tried the linux port you guys are working
on. At the time I found that whenever I telneted into it (remotely or
locally) it drew screens like I was on a 300 bps modem (literally). Also I
could never get passed entering a new password for my new user because it
would freeze and I'd have to kill it. I'm sure by now things like that have
been fixed.. I've got some questions about how it will operate though...
- On my windows computer each node runs in a seperate window. I can easily
see who's doing what. If someone pages me, I can answer the page and chat
with a user.. I can take over the keyboard and control the bbs etc.. On
linux, it seems that maximus runs as as a hidden process. Is there a way I
can see what people are doing on the BBS, answer pages, etc...? "Snoop
mode" I'll be honest, I didn't spend much time playing with Maximus
for linux and nor am I a linux expert.
- The ability to play DOS door games is extremely important for me. I know
I can use dosemu, and apparantly newer versions even have a built in fossil
driver kind of thing that can be used with the winsock bbs? I don't really
know much about it but I've heard it can be done. Do most doors work fine
this way, and is it fast? The problem I have on my win2k pro computer is
once two nodes are playing doors then all other nodes start to crawl. I
hope linux is better at multitasking DOS programs. Oh and like the BBS, I
want to know if I can jump in and watch the users, chat with them etc...
- Are you preserving modem support? It would be nice... eventually I'd like
to get a dialup node if users say they'd use it.
It's great to see so much activity in here and that people are still
working hard on it. Before I joined fidonet I got the impression there were
only 2 people working on it and there wasn't much activity on source forge.
I thought no one was really working on it anymore. When it's solid
(including MEX!) I'll use it if it runs any better than my windows setup.
BTW can someone tell me why when I use the win32 version of Maximus 3.1,
doors don't work? I've noticed that it doesn't output the right COM port to
the dropfile .. but I've tried hardcoding the proper com port into the
doorsys.mec and doors still wouldn't work. That's why I'm using the DOS
maximus on windows.
Thanks,
Ryan
