I have fond memories of Fidonet, but recent posts in this echo almost make
me glad that Fidonet is dying.  Is anyone here interested in amateur radio
at all?

I'm currently agonising over whether to buy a 2m mobile radio so that I can
at least get into the local repeater, to save up until the middle of next
year when I might be able to buy a dual-band mobile (opening the door to
IRLP) or to just keep saving until I'm old and grey and can afford an Icom
IC-718 (or whatever the equivalent will be by then).
