Hi Joe,
-> Just wanted to jump in here for a second to say that you're correct
-> if you're speaking about the effects of corrosion, etc on O/B engines
-> in the southern portion of Florida, however.....I made the move from
-> the southern portion of NJ (Delaware Bay) to the Tampa Bay area about
-> 20 years ago and was quite surprised. This area (Tampa Bay) has about
-> 5 percent of the corrosion problems that exist in Delaware Bay, and
-> many of the engines that I've worked on when they were new (1977/78)
-> are still in fairly good condition, and running strong. The engines
-> that have ended up in the truck you mentioned were a result of owner
-> neglect or patch work mechanics, etc. I have encountered a few engines
-> that were brought up from Key Largo that, as you say, were so far
-> gone from the effects of salt water that I wouldn't bother reaching
-> for a wrench.
I also have to agree with you quite a bit here, I have an older
Johnson on the fishing boat, 1968 model 85HP that is still in fairly
good condition after being in salt water for a lot of years.
Still running strong and just replaced the impeller last year.
I also have an even older 3HP Johnson that used to belong to
my father-in-law, it is in great shape. :)
All of these are Florida motors and can still be worked on, not
like some of the ones I saw back in Memphis.
