JR> making it an internet news group. Personally, I would hate to see
JR> this happen. I enjoy Fidonet echos much more than internet
JR> newsgroups. In fact, I totally gave up on the internet
JR> newsgroups about a year ago. I got sick of wading through 100
JR> messages to find 1 that was even worth reading. I have a number
I tend to agree the best thing for the Fido AUDIO echo is not
a newsgroup on the Internet. A mailing list would probably work great
though. However, not ALL Internet newsgroups are that bad, mostly
just the unmoderated ones.
I *highly* recommend rec.audio.high-end to anyone with any
interest in learning more about the way various components work and
what does matter and what doesn't in regard to various so-called
tweaks. Rec.audio.high-end has a fairly balanced readership in
regards to listeners only vs. engineers/professionals. Unlike other
audio echoes, however, RAHE is MODERATED and so a fairly civil
atmosphere is maintained. No outright flames are generally allowed,
although heated arguments are there, but I find they are actually
useful because in the process you can learn a lot about technology. I
actually know what jitter really is, where it happens, where it
matters, where it doesn't matter, etc. This never happened from
reading magazines. In fact, I think RAHE is a lot like reading the
kind of audio magazine the consumer REALLY wants. Whereas someone
like Stereophile would never hire a scientific debunker to play
devil's advocate against the unqualified "pseduo-scienctific" claims
that they make in every issue, RAHE has plenty of these at all times.
It's not much like the Fido AUDIO echo at all, really, and
it's not really just "high end" audio. In fact, like the Sensible
Sound, it's really about getting QUALITY sound at ANY price. The
guidelines specifically say PRICE is no determining factor of "high
end" sound. It's not elitist. In fact, rec.audio.opinion has FAR
more elitists (because they're able to flame everyone that doesn't
agree with them there). They're forced to be civil on RAHE and so
things are kept fairly logical in terms of "factual" claims and on the
other hand, opinions that are stated as opinions are left alone by the
debunkers.
The thing I was worrying about is that if FIDO Audio DID go
to a *moderated* NEWSGROUP (instead of a mailing list), it wouldn't
really end up being all that different. The thing that currently
separates us from rec.audio.high-end is not so much that we allow talk
of cheaper equipment (I haven't seen a lot of talk on here about
Fisher rack systems), but rather the atmosphere is a lot more low-key
like a computer user group as opposed to a computer convention,
although RAHE really isn't so much less personal (there are a LOT of
regular posters), but rather much more high volume and certain topics
reflect that, such as the latest on technology, which rarely gets
discussed here and as you say, the atmosphere feels a bit different.
The atmosphere feels a *lot* different from rec.audio.opinion, but
RAHE is a good newsgroup.
