subject: What Is A Lexicon?

Someone on the EPN Messageboard asked me what a lexicon is.

A lexicon is basically a type of inventory or dictionary of lexemes; that
is, the various forms that a word may take.

For example, run, runs, ran and running are different forms of the lexeme
"run".

When I speak of the Hebrew and Greek lexicons in my articles, I am referring
to Hebrew and Greek modules which form a part of the "Online
Bible" computer
program that I use when writing my articles and series.

As with most Bible programs, "Online Bible" displays a verse, group of
verses, chapter or book of the Bible of my choosing.

Each word in the text is assigned what is referred to as a Strong's Number.

These numbers are in turn linked to different lexemes in the Hebrew or Greek
lexicon, depending on whether I am displaying something from the Old or the
New Testament.

For example, if I open to John chapter one, verse one, and choose "Show
Strong's" under the "Display" menu, a number will appear
after each word, or
phrase, in each verse, like this:

In the beginning was (5713) the Word
, and
the Word was (5713) with God
, and the
Word was (5713) God .

If I click on the 746 after the word "beginning", the Greek lexicon will
open and display this:

746 arch arche ar-khay'

from 756; TDNT - 1:479,81; n f

KJV - beginning 40, principality 8, corner 2, first 2, misc 6; 58

1) beginning, origin
2) the person or thing that commences, the first person or thing in a
   series, the leader
3) that by which anything begins to be, the origin, the active cause
4) the extremity of a thing
4a) of the corners of a sail
5) the first place, principality, rule, magistracy
   5a) of angels and demons

As you can see, the lexicon reveals quite a bit about the word in question,
such as its original Greek form, (you can't see it here), proper
pronunciation, gender, root word reference, the different ways that it is
translated in the KJV and how many times, and the various definitions that
are applied to it, depending on how and where it is used.

In short, lexicons enable a Bible student to much better understand the
meanings of words as they are found in our English Bible.
