JV> I got a nice shield by rubbermaid at Builders Square. It's
JV> mounted below the feeder on the pole. It can also be mounted
JV> above a hanging feeder. It acts like those shields they use on
JV> boats to keep rats from climbing the ropes from the dock.
Our pole is larger in diameter than most bird feeder poles
evidently. Those squirrel guards never fit. I just put vaseline
on the pole and watch them slide down the pole!
JV> Get a fresh batch of squirrels every year, but I also get
JV> a fresh batch of hawks. They usually leave me with one or two
JV> squirrels. They do OK on the seed the birds toss out of the
JV> feeder.
I haven't had hawks after squirrels. But I have hawks get birds.
Have a couple of times seen them grab one right off the bird
feeder. Usually when the hawks are here in the winter, not too
many birds come to the feeder.
JV> I finally saw a bird that wasn't red or blue. Kind of
JV> yellow/green. Size of a sparrow. Maybe some kind of finch?
Probably a gold finch. They come through here this time of year.
They don't have the bright colors that they get later in the
year. They are rather drab in the winter. I get them
ocassionally, took me quite a while to figure out what kind of
bird they were.
