| subject: | A Connecticut mother who cheated on her wealthy husband |
http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/41655.htm March 25, 2005 -- A Connecticut mother who cheated on her wealthy husband with her rock-climbing guide and a man she met on a flight to China has been awarded nearly $45 million in one of the nation's largest post-trial divorce settlements. Susan Sosin, 51, whose husband, Howard Sosin, made a fortune off of the investment group AIG, received the settlement even after a judge chastised her for her cheating ways. "The parties' marriage has been undeniably marred by the defendant's infidelity," the judge said in his verdict. "Although her sexual relationship was not the sole cause of the breakdown, it did effectively terminate the marriage." Susan Sosin will receive a $31 million cash payment along with residences, artwork, jewelry and antiques worth close to $14 million, according to the settlement. "It's a very good result by any standard," said her lawyer, Frederic Siegel. "But the big tragedy is that it had to come to this." Howard Sosin, 54, made $182 million in 1993 when he terminated his association with the financial group he founded six years earlier. He later established a pharmaceutical company and a golf-equipment business. In the settlement, Howard Sosin gets to keep $89 million in bank accounts, 10 cars, $960,000 worth of private club memberships and $22 million in fine art. According to trial testimony, while Howard was engaged in business, his wife took up heli-skiing and rock climbing - an activity that led to a 1996 affair with a guide. During a flight to China in 2000, she met a married man and began a lengthy affair with him, according to testimony. "She fell off the edge somewhere," said Richard Albrecht, Howard Sosin's lawyer. "This is an unfortunate story of a family who, because of the husband's genius, accumulated substantial wealth and, notwithstanding all its effect, happiness eluded them. We all know money does not buy happiness, and at the end of the day this is an example of that." Howard and Susan met in 1978, when he was an assistant professor at Columbia University. At the time, she was married to another man and working in retail. They have an adult son, a teenage son and a teenage daughter.
