No jail for women shop thieves


WOMEN would not be jailed for shoplifting under crime plans unveiled by
the LibDems today.

The party said putting women in prison could damage families, and
female shoplifters should instead serve community sentences.

Leader Charles Kennedy, above, launched the party's law and order
manifesto, which includes plans to put 10,000 more police officers on
the streets.

He pledged a "tough and disciplined" approach to fighting crime, and
promised "payback" for victims.
