WB does require a valid registered user to post/access the NG side as well.

It confirms registrations by sending an email to the new user who signs up
with their password in the email, and the user has to log in via the web
within 24 hours of the email being sent to activate/validate the account.
If not, then the registration is purged. Until the user validates, no mail
is accepted from that email address.

Haven't had a spammer hit the boards yet, and they've been going since 1999.
