Writing gives me my identity and a lot of my goals in life.
Food gives me life and defines me as someone who likes to eat.
Dollars buy food. If someone hires me to write "Suck sluts from
Planet Uranus" I'll roll up my sleeves and give it my best shot. I
drove a cab in 1993, and my best friend (Dennnis Washburn) is a mucisian
here in Spokane. These experiences taught us that when some one is willing
to hire you to preform what it is that you do, you don't turn them down,
another shot might be sorta long in coming.
Actors are the same way. Writing *as art* should not be compromised. But
writing as work and craft is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for
it. Getting rich would enable me to do one main thing. Write/GM/learn to
draw and learn CGI art pretty much all I could stomach without having to
worry about that pesky "Where's my next meal coming from" issue
getting in the way.
jms wrote a book about screen writing. I read it and it's very
interesting. but one thing it said told me you wouldn't be seeing my
by-line on TV anytime soon. to suceed in writing for movies and TV you have
to move to L.A. and want it like you have never wanted anything else. you
have to be prepared to labor for years on end with no promise of making a
living at it.
jms, i presume, burns with the passion to make the funny pictures and
words in his head come to life on the screen. he's spent *at least* the
last 25 years pursuing that to the point where, in his moment of triumph
making b5 he was averaging 4 hours of sleep a night.
So when Sci Fi Channel offers him a chance to keep his franchise/baby in
play and working, does he geek?
Well he's still working in the industry, so I am going to say
"yeah", just like I would if you offered me $20 to dress in a
gorilla suit and wave a sign on a street corner for a couple of hours.
Money's money. The difference there is that he geeked to keep writing his
story and it's money. Me, I don't have the juice for any "artistic
integrity" yet.
Notice how big time Hollywood and best seller types get to write/make
anything they want? You have to buy that. it's a priveledge and you buy
it writing "Suck Sluts from Planet Uranus", consistently, on time
and with acceptable grammar. Or at least buy writing/making stuff that lots
of people are willing to pay to read/see.
I just hope than when I finish whatever book that is that I'm going to
write and pimp around that it works resonably well for the publisher, and
for the audience. Cause to work that hard on it, I'm going to have to
believe in it. I could do "Suck Sluts" as a short story. I
believe I couldn't finish "Suck Sluts" the Novel.
