Perhaps you don't realize it but when you say the system is bunk you are
knocking teacher...at least this one. I happen to think there are many
good parts to the system we have.

Not necessarily, I wouldn't have studied many of the thing required of
me to get certified. I studied many subjects because I had to take
required courses and along the way developed interests that otherwise I
never would have developed (most likely).
One thing you say is very true: It is not necessary to learn everything
by going to school. The greatest education anyone can receive is gained
from life experiences. I have learned more about teaching by teaching
than I did while in college. But college certainly put me on a solid
foundation and I often refer back to the things I was taught...both as
an undergraduate and graduate.
