MF> The A-4 Skyhawk was one...
Right, and so were the A-7 Corsair and the F-7 Crusader. I've
been able to find out the principle classes of carrier after the war were
the Forrestal class, the Midway class and the Enterprise class. What
I'm looking for is what types of aircraft were assigned to each class
and how many? For example a modern day carriers have air wings comprising
the following aircraft:
Nimitz Class: Kittyhawk Class:
24 F-14A Tomcat 24 F-4 Phantom or F-14 Tomcat
24 A-7E Corsair or F/A-18 Hornet 24 A-7 Corsair or F/A-18
Hornet
10 A-6E Intruder 10 A-6E Intruder
4 KA-6D Intruder 4 KA-6D Intruder
4 E-2C Hawkeye 4 E-2C Hawkeye
4 E-6B Prowler 4 E-6B Prowler
10 SA-3 Viking 10 SA-3 Viking
6 SH-3H Sea King 6 SH-3H Sea King
1 C-2A Greyhound
This list is only typical, and may change due to operational
requirements, and aircraft phase-out, but it's typical of what I'm
looking for for the Post WWII - Pre Viet Nam war Carriers like
the Forrestal, Midway and Enterprise classes. I also understand there
was another class of carrier after the war, nicknamed the C-F(?) class
that might have been a WWII carrier with an add-on angled flight deck,
but I still don't have a positive reference on that class yet. Hope
this sheds some light on what I was looking for. Thanks for the
input.
