Strip club tax would woo Tinseltown

The Tennessee Film Commission is hoping that a plan to tax strip 
club patrons will raise millions of dollars to lure Hollywood 
producers to the state to make their blockbuster hits.

''This could be an amazing incentive,'' said David Bennett, the 
executive director of the state Film, Entertainment & Music 
Commission.

Bennett calls the plan ''unusual and remarkable.''

Indeed. Because here's the naked truth: One criterion a lawmaker 
wants for the moviemakers to get the cash is that their films 
must show the ''best side of woman'' and show Tennessee in a 
favorable light. Critics say that such Pollyanna plans raise 
issues of censorship, with Tennessee deciding what movies get 
a subsidy and which don't.

As part of the incentive plan, Miller (Rep. Larry Miller, D) 
said he wanted to use the cash so producers would ''Give us 
films to show the better side of women.''

And although the film commission would get the bulk of the cash 
raised from the strip club cover charge — which might amount to 
$2 million annually, according to some estimates — 20% of the 
money would go to the Tennessee Economic Council on Women to 
provide grants.
