AM>> I used to be a SysOp of 2:5066/84 12+ years ago. I was young and
AM>> inquiring, and had absolutely no problems settings up and
AM>> tweaking FTN software. Nowadays I'm having problems doing all
AM>> that stuff. I forgot everything and there's not much information
AM>> on the Internet about it.
NB>> One's brain gets rusty and forgets the magic spells needed.... and I'm
NB>> not surprised there's not much on the internet about bbses...
AM> Yeah. In the past there were people living on the same street who
AM> could help me resolve software issues for a little fee (beer to be
AM> exact). Now I have to fight software issues myself. It is especially
AM> hard when software is not set up at all and you cannot cry for help in
AM> local echos on your uplink.
At least now you are hooked into a source for some help... :)
AM>> Anyway... it looks like I finally managed to make my fidoip
AM>> bundle to work. (:
AM>> ! Origin: twixed BBS (1:275/98)
NB>> Yes, I see that you are posting from your own bbs now... :) Good
NB>> job... :)
AM> Ah... I would not call that a BBS. I'm mostly acting as a FidoNet
AM> point. I've tried to use Mystic BBS as my main and only software pack
AM> and entry point, but it does not support CP866 for Z2 (which I need to
AM> read and reply to messages in Russian echoareas). So right now I have
AM> binkd running as daemon on my linux VPS, hpt to parse packets and
AM> GoldEd+ to read messages. Mystic BBS set up separately and receives and
AM> posts messages as .666 on my node. Not very convenient and might be
AM> against Policy. So most probably there will be no BBS on my node (who
AM> needs another one anyway?).
I suppose a bbs on your node might permit others to come in as users, at
least.... ;) But getting the access for yourself is probably a
reasonable first priority... ;)
AM>> Now I'm interested, what software people use in Z1.
NB>> Can't help you much there, I'm just a "lowly" user... ;) But I
NB>> currently am calling bbses that use Wildcat, MBSE, RA and EZYcom...
AM> I'm still thinking about getting rid of my uplink in Z2 and to use
AM> Mystic BBS only. But I already had some issues with file tossing. I
At one point, I was helping (as a user whose sysop was trying it out) to
beta-test an earlier version of Mystic.... we couldn't get offline
messaging to work, which is what I'd want/need... dunno if that's been
totally solved yet.... That sysop was using Synchronet as his primary
bbs, and had a door into his old Telegard system....
AM> also tried MBSE and BBBS, but didnt' like them. Especially I didn't
AM> like the necessity of having system account for every BBS user (don't
AM> quite remember which one required that).
AM> All in all I was unable to find a BBS software that could replace
AM> binkd+hpt+golded, and be convenient and easy to use. ):
Lots of options out there, but no guarantee that any one will be exactly
what any particular person is looking for... :) Sometimes one gets
lucky...
