Really....it all depends on the RAM. Unless you have stonking great tables,
nowadays when RAM is cheap......& 2-4GB is not out of the
question......

The vast bulk of most operational data (i.e. that which is frequently
accessed) can be held in RAM & then the disk writes are just to persist
the data.
