Power would be my guess, yes. I had this same trouble a lot at some point,
almost making me ditch the whole ecosystem. This was with a 2.5" hdd. The
adapter seemed good, 5.1 V and 2.5 A tested. Maybe it didn't handle peaks
well. Annoyingly in a way, problems went away completely when I switched to
the official adapter which has the same specs.
