It turned up in a Star Trek comic book once.  At the end of the story, Q
and Trelane were shown playing chess, and the pieces were Kirk, Spock,
Picard, Riker, etc.

There's also "The Five Doctors" in Doctor Who.  Though the
mystery there is who's the one manipulating the chess pieces during the
story.
