Powered from the PI over USB.  The Pi is a 2B using a Pi 2.5A power
supply.  The HDD has its own power supply, and apart from a keyboard and
mouse, the only other item connected to the PI is a DHT22 (thermometer)

Thanks.  On the off chance that I'm reading that correctly, the initial
error is "Medium not present", with no hints as to the later failure to
mount etc.
