I remember thinking BA> hamburger was overpriced at $0.55/pound, it's over $2/pound now. Not necessarily true. 40 miles west of me is Beardstown, IL where my sister lives and worked until she was forced to give it up for a disability cheque. It is also home to the Excel division of Cargill - the largest pork packing operation in Illinois ... and a whole bunch of Latinos. Most of whom are *legal*. The Migros maintain a well-staffed office in Beardstown and enforcement is strict, swift and sure. I am sure that there are probably illegals in Beardstown ... but, they are few and well under the radar. There is a bigger problem here in the state capitol, especially WRT restaurant workers. Not, oddly, in the Mexican restaurants ... but, in many of the upscale and mid-priced places haunted by the local WASPs and their politico minions. Do you really think they DD> want to struggle trying to cross the border? BA> Since the problem has been going on for well over half a century, yes. The Mexican economy has been in the toilet for far longer than that. So, no. Of course the Mexicans with whom I have discussed this are legals ... most would still have preferred to stay "home" if they could earn a decent living and not have to worry about getting snuffed by a drug gang.
