Chuck,
My personal favorite is this method. Get yourself a good solid base
table of some kind. Important factors are; 1. It is perfectly flat, and
2. It is large enough for the building you want to do yet small enough to
deal with in your home. I had one built for me and it uses a frame made of
1x3 with a 3/4" particle board mounted into the top. The particle board is
held in by screws so it can be easily changed should the need ever arise.
Once you have the base table, slide on out to your local hardware store
and pick up a few plain, white, non textured ceiling tiles. You know the
type, about 2'by 4' for suspended ceilings? I use these for the actual
building surface. Pins go into them easily and hold well. One tile lasts
for several projects. They are big enough to handle most of the average
projects and, they are cheap, going for under $5 each. So, when one is too
messed up to use anymore you just lift it off your table and replace it with
a new one. The table stays nice and clean this way.
If you are into bigger models then there is a larger foam board
available in 4'x 8' sheets that I understand works as well or better than
the ceiling tiles. I don't use it so I don't know its name but I believe it
is either green or blue in color and 1/2 or 5/8" thick.
But the bottom line is to have a solid, flat, smooth base table.
Remember, any warp, twist, hump, bump, or other flaw in the base table will
be built into every wing and fuselage you do. It must be flat.
So, that old model railroad table might work but, you'll have to take
the mountain and village off it first and fill in the lake and river. Hope
this helps and let us know what you do. I'm sure others will reply with
their methods. TTYL
