Some of the characters in Rangers had potential. There was some good
dialog. But they never had opportunity to grow past the thin stereotypes
jms likes to use and foundations for characters.

The captain was jms' favorite "rogue captain" (Who breaks the
rules and annoys his superior officers but gets the job done in the end)

The XO, well he got all the good lines. But as for his role in the show, I
refer you to the Chris Rock Rock Show sketch spoofing "Bagger
Vance" .... "Help me magic Minbari!"

The weapons officer was jms' common "Dangerous Woman" stereotype

The Narn woman was the "Prickly outsider who wants to belong"

The Drazi was "The Big Dumb Brick, who is entertaininly
straightforward, and occasionally smarter than he looks"

There were two other guys in the crew but they were so vague as to be generic.

I am a fine one to talk. ST-OM doesn't do the ensemble thing terribly
well, but I feel a good crew of characters is necessary for a good trek
series. Or any space opera where people dress funny and pretend to be on
space ships. (Stargate is in this category, too but you'd have had to watch
it.)

I suppose Farscape is one of the leaders for the most unusual
conglomerations of characters.
