JA> From the vintage of your equipment, I cannot say with JA>any JA>authority that different speaker cables, upgraded patch cords JA>between JA>your gear and two channel sound card nor replacing the "bare JA>wire JA>speaker connectors" with 5 Way Binding Posts, would make ANY JA>difference. I would not believe that the "hum" in your system JA>is being caused by the type or gauge of wire nor termination. JA> With that said, I believe I would still go ahead and JA>replace the "bare wire speaker connectors" with a good JA>quality JA>spade lug or 5 Way post. This change is very inexpensive and JA>simple JA>to execute with a minimum of time and tools. JA> Were I to get the bug and change speaker cables I JA>wouldn't JA>go to anything more exotic than something like the Tara Labs JA>Klara JA>cable at $.79 (US) per ft. I have an old Dynaco Amp that I JA>just love. JA>It is far from the best amp available, and even was a mid JA>priced JA>amp back in the 70s when it came into being. But it has a JA>wonderful JA>warm sound and it sits and plays in a place of honor in my JA>office, JA>where I listen to it for hours on end. JA> When I first acquired the amp I was like a little kid JA>at Xmas JA>and almost had the lid off before I got it in the house. I JA>was JA>horrified to see the wiring and quality of wire used in its' JA>manufacture. Yet it sounds great. What would I gain by JA>putting JA>really primium grade cables on the outside when the inside JA>looks JA>like a Radio Shack odds and ends sale? Probably nothing. JA> I ended up using Monster Interlink 200 balanced patch JA>cords and original issue Monster Cable speaker wires, and JA>doubt anything else would sound better. What is outside will JA>not improve what is inside. JA> My main system is a different story. I heard a JA>difference JA>that I liked between the Monsters and the Tara Labs that I JA>finally JA>selected. But my individual pieces of equipment and speakers JA>all JA>have excellent wiring, terminations and binding posts. So JA>cable JA>upgrading seemed more logical. JA> Cables and terminations are a very hot topic among JA>engineers JA>and some of our "golden earred brethren". I have spent many JA>hours reading JA>both sides of the subject. And as a result I am more confused JA>than when I started. I just go with my ears and to hell with JA>everyone else. JA> Guess that isn't really much help, but if you get JA>tired of that JA>"vintage" equipment, give me a shout. JA>Cheers, John JA>--- Maximus/2 3.01 JA>(1:114/260) Hey! Thanks for the response. I suppose, minimumly, upgrading to "state of the art" would be the "ultimate" solution for the problems of 60 cycle hum nd all that that my Yamaha P-2200 is giving off on its own lately without the attenuators full on and the Crown IC-150 completely turned off. You have to literally stick yer head in the speaker to hear it, however, but it does now do this after 20 odd years of faithfull service. My aux power amp is a very used McIntosh 2105 that makes more hiss than a roomful of rattle snakes. But it disappears after the first few notes and a comfortable volume both in speakers and headphones of which I do most of my listening. Santa (wife) bought me the Sony MDR-V600 stereo headphones this Christmas and I hear stuff I ain't ne'r heard before. But none of it is bad. I wonder what is out on the market these days that would be good equipment? My system has a very flat frequency response and I do not know whether oday's systems are colored or whether flat response is a selling point, what with today's crappy music needing so much bass response and lack of strings sections, brass sections, etc. Hey! My old Horowitz vinyls sound better to me than the CD re-issues. - Pedit Ver 2.2 --- GEcho 1.20/Pro (1:369/8) ---------------JA> * Origin: The Union Jack BBS, Phoenix, AZ, USA. 602-274-9921 * Origin: The CatWalk BBS Davie, Fl 305-370-3528 USR V.EveryThing |
