subject: re: cpu for novell server

-> Can someone tell me if running a 6x86 Cyrix chip with Novel Netware
-> v4.10. Basically I am considering getting a 6x86 Cyrix CPu due to
-> the prices being good at the moment.
I'm not sure how Novell would handle the Cyrix, but there have been
problems with these chips handling certain functions, usually involving
the math co-processor. Novell will run on a variety of processors -
I've been running it here for nearly three years on a lowly 486sx33
without a problem. The Novell box is the main file server, handles
the message bases for the BBS, and holds the BBS executables & door
programs. Novell's compression and sub-allocation are enabled, and
that gave a nice boost compared with plain old DOS storage capability.
The file server for the file archives here is actually a Lantastic box.
Lantastic's not as fast, (especially for database access), but is a
lot cheaper to license, and requires a lot less memory - the Lantastic
7.0 server is running on a mere 640k, yet supports 19 cd-roms and 4.2g
of disk space. While it doesn't have sub-allocation, I saved a ton of
money on RAM that would have to be allocated for the disk space.
