I've also resorted to your way when it's just a few echos, or I'm
restarting one that I had given up on for a while.  And when I couldn't
do u/l's, just d/l's...

You u/l it directly to the bbs, at Your Settings/Offline/Upload PTR. 
And no, what might have trashed the message packet d/l might have been
simply a missing file, that was needed to open the whole thing for the
reader.  PKZIPFIX will untrash sufficiently to be able to extract the
PTR out of the ZIPfile (with PKUNZIP) in that case.  I've done that,
more than once, over the years.

And, you mentioned earlier that you hadn't had experience with the BW
door...  I'm surprised at that, since your other BBS, Juxtaposition, has
the BW door, and I've been using that as one of my backup bbs's.  :)
