When they EOL a product. When they remove it from sale. When they claim
it's obsolete. When it's obvious they don't see it as a source of income.

According to Microsoft windows versions have a 10 year life span, the
copyright should last 10 years then. Actually it should last less than 10
years so the public domain gets it before it's totally useless, copyright
expiration doesn't mean MS can't sell it or support for it anymore.
Copyrights are about a fair return, not maximizing profits.
