Did you trip the metal detector at the security checkpoint?  If
you did, they are probably within their rights to check you if
not, possibly they aren't.
If you feel your rights wer violated, file a written complaint
with the airport operator, the airline and the f.a.a. and
possibly the u.s. attorney general's office or whoever licensed
the security firm running the checkpoint.
Personally, I find security personnel who seem to be of recent
foreign origin less responsive to passenger comments or requests
not to x-ray stuff than ones that are of u.s. or Canadian origin.
