Hello to All,
We are considering moving to Minnesota and are interested in learning about
the home school environment there. We have received an outline of the state
law from the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). But, it would be
nice to know some practical implications of how this law is worked out. Here
are some of the questions we have:
1. Do the local districts have any input into our curriculum, or are we free
to develop our own?
2. Do the local districts have to have any due process to come into our home?
Do we have the right to not allow them into our home? What constitutes "just
cause" for them to follow up on any suspicions they may have?
3. Is there an average number of hours per day that we need to have for the
170-175 days we have school?
4. Are we free to have an "accelerated curriculum" where we can have our
children complete school before they are 18? (This assumes that we are
actually teaching them - we are not interested in going through a watered
down curriculum just to push them through quicker).
5. Are there a lot of good support groups available? What kinds of things do
the support groups offer - for both parents and children?
6. Any other information you may have for us will be appreciated.
We are fairly excited about the opportunity to move back there and be closer
to all of our families. But, we want to make sure the homeschooling will work
well before we commit to the move.
It you have any experience in Minnesota and will share it with us, we will be
forever grateful.
Thank you and God bless you,
Michael and Peggy Haining
