My understanding is that pharmacutical speed (Ritalin, Dexadrine, etc. -- 
I've, at age 28, have had prescriptions to both) does work different on 
adults in that its onset (the time it takes to have an affect) is almost 
immediate, In kids, it takes awhile for the medicine to kick in. Also, the 
long-term effects of taking speed are more serious for younger patients.
