I'll deny the "retarded" bit, but other than that....okay. You make a
good point about both kinds of gender-related hate being around for the
same amount of time.
What I meant to say, and thank you for helping me clarify my thinking,
was that I believe organized, socially-accepted misogyny has been
around longer than organized, socially-accepted misandry. And I'm
certainly willing to consider the argument that I'm interpreting
history in a biased way because I am a woman - I just know that the
stuff I've read about gender & power so far hasn't changed my mind.
Of course, Andre would jump in here and call me a "festering femmeroid"
who hasn't been doing her assigned "homework", according to his
unsolicited standards. It doesn't occur to him that I can disagree with
something for any other reason than that I'm too much of a
muddle-headed misandrist housewife to understand it. If he sees it as
truth, God help anyone who doesn't believe it too.
I don't believe that all of feminist thought is good. Some of it is
quite horrifying to me, and I don't mean to excuse or blame it but only
try to explain or understand it. Doesn't that polarization of thought
happen in any movement? Isn't it human nature? I do believe that
feminism has _some_ noble ideals - but I do wish the extreme opinions
didn't get all the press. Because I know a lot of women, and those
opinions certainly don't speak for us.
