subject: Re: Impressions Of Linux From a Newbie (me!)

From: Chris Robinson

I've been running XP at home pretty much as soon as it became available.

I'll keep yoiu posted then on my experiences with Linux. It's definately
the whole recovery thing I'm going to get stuck on if (or when?) something
goes wrong. I've already patched it a few times and upgraded the Kernel.
This is simple in RedHat as it has a patch wizard (a bit like the critical
update notification in Windows) that just guides you through patching which
is great for me - I can choose which patches to apply and which not to :o)

One thing I am having problems with at the moment is multimedia support.
This is an area that Linux (at least RedHat anyway) needs to work on from
an "out of the box" perspective. There was no MPEG player
installed by default and the one I've downloaded (mtv) is crap - it keeps
crashing my system when I go to full screen. I'm also looking for
something that supports DivX - I found a media player that does all this (I
*think* it's XMPS or somthing like that). It claims to support Win32 codecs
so that'll be great if that works. I'm also trying Wine so I can run some
Windows programs I may need.
